Cold calling statistics 2026: 50 figures with their sources

Fifty cold calling statistics for 2026 from Gong, Cognism, Bridge Group and Gartner, each traced to its source, plus eight famous figures that have none.

100 Dials15 min read

An average SDR connects on about 5% of dials and turns about 5% of those connects into a meeting. A top-quartile rep connects on 13% and converts 17%, which is roughly four times the output from the same list. The median SDR hits quota 60% of the time, ramps in three months and stays under two years. Those are the cold calling statistics that matter in 2026, and every figure on this page is traced to the organisation that measured it, with the year and the size of the dataset where the source gives one. Most of the data comes from platform vendors, Gong, Cognism, Orum, Chorus and ZoomInfo, measuring calls made through their software. That is not peer-reviewed research and we say so. It is still the largest body of evidence on cold calls that exists. At the end is a list of eight famous cold calling statistics that no one can source, so you can stop citing them.

We will add figures from our own practice calls once the sample is large enough to mean something. For now this page is other people's data, labelled.

Put three of those together and the cost of a slow ramp is visible: a 40% attrition rate on a $106,000 seat with a three-month ramp means a team of ten pays for roughly a year of unproductive SDR time every year. Our piece on average SDR ramp time goes through where the weeks go.

No independent study yet measures the effect of AI roleplay on SDR outcomes. Every figure we have seen is a vendor case study, ours would be too, and we have left them all out. Our page for sales managers describes what we measure instead.

Eight cold calling statistics that have no source

These appear in almost every statistics roundup. We looked for the original study behind each one and could not find it.

The claimWhat we found
"92% of all customer interactions happen over the phone"No study. The earliest instance is a 2015 listicle that cites nothing
"It takes 8 cold call attempts to reach a prospect"Attributed to a 2007 study that measured 3.68. The "8" has no publication behind it. Cognism measured 2.9 in 2025 and 1.55 in 2026
"80% of sales require 5 follow-up calls" and "44% of reps give up after one follow-up"Two marketing blogs from around 2016, no dataset, and the numbers change between sites
"80% of calls go to voicemail and 90% of first voicemails are never returned"One vendor cited by one article. Gong's voicemail data above is the traceable version
"Reps forget 70% of training within a week and 87% within a month"Attributed to Gartner and to Xerox. Neither published it. Use the forgetting-curve replication above
"48% of salespeople are afraid to cold call"Attributed to Gartner. The nearest real survey is ValueSelling's 39%
"Reps coached three or more hours a month hit 107% of quota"Not on the Sales Management Association's site or in its reports
"4pm to 6pm is 114% better than mid-morning for cold calls"A 2007 study. Gong, Cognism and ZoomInfo all now show late morning as the best window

Questions people ask

What is the average cold call success rate in 2026?
Around 2 to 5% of calls become a meeting, depending on the denominator. Cognism measured 2.3% of calls booking a meeting across 204,000 calls in its 2025 report, and 4.82% of conversations in 2024. Gong found average reps turn 4.6% of connects into meetings and top reps 16.7%. Always ask whether a rate is per dial, per connect or per conversation.
How many cold calls does it take to get one meeting?
For an average rep, roughly 19 dials to get one conversation and about 22 conversations to book one meeting, using Gong's 300 million call dataset, so a few hundred dials per meeting. A top-quartile rep connects on 13.3% of dials and converts 16.7% of connects, which is closer to 45 dials per meeting.
What is the best time to cold call?
Late morning on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, in the prospect's time zone. Gong's 300 million call analysis found the best success rates between 11am and noon and between 4pm and 5pm. Cognism's 2025 and 2026 reports put the best hour at 10 to 11am and the best days at Tuesday and Thursday. ZoomInfo found Tuesday and Wednesday produce 44% of demos booked.
